Working with the NHS
Partnering with the NHS means we can leverage shared experience, data, and technology to drive progress and ensure quality care for patients across the UK. Our population health approach ensures that we are prevention focused on long-term conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), type 2 diabetes, heart failure and chronic kidney disease, as well as cancer.
We seek to work together with the NHS toward transformational improvements in clinical outcomes, aligning to the NHS achievement of its Long-Term Plan and financial incentives and implementation of the CORE20Plus5 agenda.
We are working together with the NHS to deliver strategies that reduce workload and waiting lists, supporting the adoption of new clinical guidelines, and reducing the NHS’ carbon footprint.
Central to our partnership with the NHS is a shared commitment to delivering equitable access to high-quality and innovative healthcare solutions that can be scalable and sustainable to address areas of unmet need in the UK.
Working with the NHS we have hundreds of partnerships focused on early diagnosis and delivering faster and more equitable access to evidence based medicines which prevent progression and keep people out of hospital. Find out more about our Purpose-led Partnerships:
Collaborative working
Collaborative working is generally between one or more pharmaceutical companies, healthcare organisations and possibly other organisations, which may include the third sector or social enterprises. It must have, and be able to demonstrate, the pooling of skills, experience and/or resources from all the parties involved. There must be a shared commitment to successful delivery from everyone involved and each organisation must make a significant contribution.
Our ‘collaborative working’ with the NHS gives us a better understanding of the needs of commissioners, healthcare professionals and patients to maintain and enhance care. We ensure that all projects operate in a manner aligned to the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) code and with that, continue to work alongside the regulator of the pharmaceutical industry, the Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority (PMCPA), to ensure all our work is transparent and enhances patient care.
Joint working
As part of this collaborative approach, our patient centred joint working initiatives allow us to focus on specific areas of unmet need. Joint working provides the formal foundation for utilising what science can do to develop and implement progressive healthcare solutions, which deliver better outcomes for patients and the NHS. The term covers partnerships where, for the benefit of patients, one or more pharmaceutical companies and the NHS pool skills, experience and/or resources, for the joint development and implementation of patient-centred projects, with a shared commitment to successful delivery.
By combining our resources and expertise, we can improve the lives of patients in line with best practice NICE and NHS guidelines, as well as ensuring that more people can access the innovative medicines they need, build trust with our NHS stakeholders, and help the NHS achieve its objectives.
AstraZeneca has a commitment to openness and transparency with regard to any donations, sponsorship, or partnership funding it provides and, in line with the ABPI Code of Practice, will document and publicly disclose transfers of value made directly or indirectly to health professionals and healthcare organisations.
